The beauty in blank space, which is a long-standing tradition in Japanese art, and washi paper made in line with seasonal patterns are key elements of the design. These calendars featuring photo-realistic pictures of sushi toppings are made with traditional washi paper from the Echizen region, which has a history going back over 1,000 years.
From the unique silvery-white shine of sardines’ skin to the glistening, clear squid, the texture and freshness of the sushi is brought to life in great detail by applying techniques that effectively combine offset and silk-screen printing to hand-drawn illustrations.
With 24 items displayed on a backing evoking the image of a white plate, the exhibition’s design fully expresses the experience of savoring sushi.
